  The social norms approach has been used effectively in the area of tobacco reduction, both to promote cessation and to prevent the onset of use. These interventions have occurred in universities, high schools, and community-statewide settings.

Among the universities that have used the social norms approach in this way are:

  • Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)
  • University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh (UW Oshkosh)

High schools that are using social norms in this way include:

  • DeKalb & Sycamore
  • Evanston Township
  • Naperville

Finally, one groundbreaking project in this area was an effective 8-month social norms campaign targeting youth initiation of smoking in seven counties in western Montana:
